State of Florida
The State of Florida has a “Voluntary Registration with Permitting” law in place.
Type of Act: Allows for Sign, Seal, and Permitting

Exam Required: NCIDQ
An “Interior Designer” in Florida is defined as someone who designs, consults, studies, draws, and manages design construction contracts relating to non-structural interior elements of a building or structure.
What does this mean for you?
It means that as a Licensed Interior Designer, you are able to submit your work to obtain work permits and you are able to work in the Residential and Commercial design industries on your own.
fLORIDA REGULATORY BOARD OF ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN
The Board of Architecture and Interior Design is responsible for licensing and regulating architects and interior designers. The board meets regularly to consider applications for licensure, to review disciplinary cases, and to conduct informal hearings relating to licensure and discipline. The board engages in rule-making to implement the provisions set forth in its statutes and conducts other general business, as necessary.

In 2019, our former VP of Advocacy, Aida Lora and former Director of Advocacy, Lisbeth Linert along with some of our South Florida Chapter members, led an extensive coordinated effort to lobby the State Legislature against deregulation of the Interior Design profession in the State of Florida.
IIDA POLICY STATEMENTS
IIDA is a strong advocate for the Commercial Interior Design profession and the policy statements below illustrate our continued support for the licensure, registration, and/or certification of interior designers who work in a code-impacted environment.

“The International Interior Design Association recognizes and supports the adoption of legislation that allows individuals to be licensed/registered/certified interior designers.”
“Licensure/registration/certification assists the profession in establishing and maintaining standards the protect the health, safety, and welfare of the general public.”

“The Association supports organizational communication to establish a network for the exchange of pertinent information that may improve environmental efforts.”
“The Association suggests that design professionals and design organizations work in conjunction with manufacturers, regulatory bodies and private organizations to develop guidelines and specifications for the certification of materials, products, manufacturing processes, and energy systems.”
